The News On Iatrogenic Nightmares
Extra Extra. Here is an amputee suing the hospital after a surgery horror. Medical atrocities are in no way a thing of the past. Headline after headline has to make you wonder why they continue at such an alarming rate. If you read all about it, you might feel a little sick afterwords, as I felt slightly sick after researching and writing this piece on iatrogenic nightmares, which means, these occurrences are relating to illness or injury caused by medical exam, treatment, or surgery.
Pelvic/Vagional Mesh– There are over 6,000 lawsuits pertaining to this. Surgeons ‘install’ this mesh in women who have had pelvic organ prolapse, or when muscles in the area weaken, causing organs to bulge or slip down into the vagina, which can happen because of age, childbirth, or other reasons, and can cause pain and bladder leakage. The problem is, in at least 6,000 cases, the patient suffered complications such as pain, infection, mesh erosion, bleeding, and bowel, bladder and blood vessel perforation and in many cases the women (the more fortunate ones) had the mesh removed.
Doctor Commits First Degree Murder– Here are some excerpts from the grand jury report, in the case of Kermit Gosnell, 72, a ‘doctor’ (if I must)…a horrifying story: “This case is about a doctor who killed babies and endangered women. He regularly and illegally delivered live, viable babies in the third trimester of pregnancy – and then murdered these newborns by severing their spinal cords with scissors. The medical practice by which he carried out this business was a filthy fraud in which he overdosed his patients with dangerous drugs, spread venereal disease among them with infected instruments, perforated their wombs and bowels – and, on at least two occasions, caused their deaths.” Why any person whould do such a thing, I do not know. the case made big headlines and is documented here http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/04/why-dr-kermit-gosnells-trial-should-be-a-front-page-story/274944/
Bad Drug- I found an excellent site that gives you a comprehensive list of all the drugs manufactured out there, A-Z, with an appropriate warning, if needed. Although there are dozens of bad drugs out there, I’ll just mention common Acetaminophen, which can wreak havoc with an overdose, occuring when a patient takes too much of this medication, and can cause the liver to fail, characterized by pain in the upper right section of the abdomen, yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), seizures, loss of appetite, nausea with or without vomiting, and, in serious cases, death or coma. Ulcers or intestinal bleeding may also form while taking this medication, although these side effects are more rare. As with most medications there is the risk for a rare but serious allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, which can cause swelling of the face and throat, dizziness, rash, itching, or hives. http://www.bad-drug.net/bad-drug/acetaminophen
Bad Robot Surgery-According to recent media reports, a growing number of robotic surgery lawsuits have been filed on behalf of individuals who allegedly suffered organ damage, torn blood vessels, and other serious complications in procedures involving the da Vinci Surgical System. According to one Bloomberg.com report, at least 10 bad robot surgery lawsuits involving the da Vinci robot were pending in various courts as of March 2013. Some of the other situations occurring as a result of the surgery were surgical burns and tears to arteries and other blood vessels, surgical burns and tears to vital organs, excessive bleeding, cut ureters, bowel injuries, and death. Ah, so much for robot surgery.
Wrong Site Surgery– Dr Rolando Sanchez, a Florida surgeon, was told by a nurse that he was amputating the wrong leg of his patient just as he finished cutting through it. Look it up for your self if you doubt this, and here are several other similar accounts- all horrifying http://tbo.com/health/medical-news/doctors-struggle-with-persistent-error-cutting-the-wrong-part-70790
Baby Mix-Ups-Despite all the security surrounding newborns, there are few documented cases of mothers sent home with the wrong baby. But you gotta ask “How would they know?” In Romania in 2008, a new mother named Christina Zanariuc knew, because the daughter she was sent home with turned out to have a penis.
