The Floods In Uttarakhand And Colorado

floodThe floods in Uttarakhand and Colorado, the typhoon brewing in Japan, hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, as well as the devastating droughts, are all products of climate disruption due to global warming.

We’ve known for decades that carbon wrecks our health and our climate, and some of the big producers of carbon pollution are power plants, meat packing companies, and fuel extraction such as fracking. The pollution fuels climate disruption — it makes wildfires burn hotter and droughts last longer. Warm summer weekends become scorching heatwaves and floods become disasters. Unlimited carbon pollution means more smog, more asthma attacks, and more climate disruption.

Some want to bury their heads in the sand and say it’s not true. Here is the mentality:

  •  Oh, but tenderloin steak is so delicious, and we need red meat in our diets- we must support meat packing companies!
  • My Exxon stock is continuing to make money for me, as it has done for years. And so what if the Exxon Valdez spilled all 53,094,510 gallons of oil it was carrying when the Captain ran the ship a muck. I’m keeping all 200 shares of stock I own, cause it makes me just too much damn money.
  • Fracking? Well, we gotta get oil somehow. It’s really not the much warmer, and no one really knows for sure.
  •  Park and walk? Are you kidding me?

southparkWhen I arrived in Pennsylvania in 1989, I came to lush green woods, summer rains, and full streams in South Park, where we enjoyed long trail rides on Dolly, and hundreds of walks with Libby, Flex, and Brandi. I knew every stream. By the time I left PA in 2010, the summer rains had fallen off to a meager few, and the streams had all but dried up. The lushness also fell off. You cannot tell me the weather has not changed.

Do your part to slow global warming;

  • Conserve energy and water whenever you can
  •  Eat less meat, or none at all
  •  Drive a hybrid car, and make sure you have one ‘no drive’ day every week
  • Invest green- you can still make money in the stock market without buying into companies that are wrecking the earth

As the chance for  harsh disasters have increased, I put together Madeleine’s Survival List, just in case

Especially in these times, always be prepared by keeping a small stockpile of food, supplies, and healing equipment on hand, because, you never know…you never know
